Pacheco, José (1784-1865)

José Pacheco (born in Mondoñedo, 15-12-1784)
José Basanta Fernández Pacheco, known as José Pacheco, was a musician and a Choirmaster.
In 1795, he joined the children's choir of Mondoñedo Cathedral , where he was instructed in musical education.
In 1805 the council sent him to Santiago de Compostela to deepen his musical education with master Melchor Lopez. It was from him that he took a fondness for Galician Carols.
In 1808 he replaced master Santavalla and was appointed Kapellmeister at Mondoñedo's , where he served for nearly 60 years.
Teacher, organist and composer, among his more than 300 works we can highlight a Miserere written in 1805.
He composed religious music, of which are remarkable several Psalms, two Stabat Mater and two Te Deum; and some classical music, including several motets, and above all, Christmas carols.
29 out of 150 carols are written in Galician Language.
D. Jose Pacheco was the teacher of the renowned composer Pascual Veiga.
Pacheco uses elements of Galician folk music in many of his compositions.
He died on March 23rd , 1865 in Mondoñedo.
One of his masterpieces, The plorans, is still sung nowadays at the Easter procession of La Soledad in Mondoñedo, most of the time accompanied by music and in front of a large audience, which keeps respectful silence.
